On the night of December 25-26th, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington led a daring and pivotal crossing of the icy Delaware River. Under the cover of darkness and amid treacherous conditions, Washington and his men braved freezing waters to launch a surprise attack on Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. This bold maneuver turned the tide of the war and cemented Washington’s legacy as a leader of resilience and vision.
Seventy-five years later, in 1851, during a time of great turbulence, Emanuel Leutze immortalized this moment in his monumental painting, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” which now hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
